“Voidmother” Barrack was in tears at the sight of the goddess. Her body, black as the void had only one spinning galaxy in her heart. She looked down at Barrack, her harsh judgement filling her eyes. Even though her eyes were only outlines where eyes would be in her face you could tell how she was looking at you.
“What have you done?” The Voidmother said harshly her voice filling the room with its powerful, womanly anger.
“I killed them Voidmother, I did it for you” Barrack said falling to his knees and bowing “And now you have noticed me”
“What makes you think I wish for such bloodshed?” The Voidmother looked around the room at the piles of gored corpses in each corner.
“It is you that created the guardian Death and the Deathless. You are the destruction to The Creator’s construction the yin to his yang” Barrack said in praise.
“I created necessary evils to cleanse this planet when it needed it most. I balanced the power of the spectrals with the Deathless, but I do not love death. I despise that humans live as they do and that they are mortal, but I understand that it is what makes you so wonderful” The Voidmother said.
“B-But” Barrack’s world was shattered, everything he thought he knew was a lie.
“Do you know what this is Barrack?” The Voidmother pointed to the lone swirling mass of stars in her chest “It is you, your galaxy and that of the spirits. You are my heart. A gift of love from my husband to me in the earliest years of creation. I do not loath this world it is my greatest gift, a symbol of love”
“I… But Voidmother…” Barrack was speechless.
“These lives were lost for nothing but to get my attention. I cannot let that go unpunished” The Voidmother said.
“No! Please spare me! I still wish to live!” Barrack begged groveling on the ground.
“I will not kill you, but the monster that you have become will consume you” The Voidmother raised a hand up holding it to the cowering Barrack. Pain suddenly shot through him as if his heart exploded. He cried out as something crawled its way through his chest and to his skin. It ate away his flesh from the inside until he was only skin and bone making room or it to grow inside. Barracks felt every bit of pain as the creature ate him alive sparing his consciousness. It wiggled its way into his brain attaching itself to him. Once he was able to move he saw his emaciated arms pulse and move with whatever was under his skin.
“What. Is happening” Barrack sputtered out.
“You are immortal. Your body will heal from nearly any wound, but you will feel the pain of every moment. You will walk alone on earth as a parasite unable to join society due to your new appearance. Perhaps in time you will come to see as the spirits do, gain wisdom from this punishment. Goodbye Barrack”
Those were the last words The Voidmother ever said to Barrack. He walked alone for fifty years wallowing in his sorrow. He stabbed himself with swords, kept off buildings, anything that might end his suffering. Anyone who faced him shunned him or attacked him as if he were a rabid animal. Fifty years of suicide attempts and silence was enough to drive anyone mad.
Barrack remembered the first person to become infected. They were in a bar fight when some of barracks blood got into his mouth. He came to Barrack sickly, something was eating him from the inside. The human did not survive, but it sparked something in Barrack. Perhaps he could end his lonely suffering, perhaps he could make more like him. He began kidnapping anyone he could get his hands on and experimenting with his blood. It only took him a month to find that he only needed to keep giving of his blood to stave off the death of those he’d infected. For a time he would hold himself over stirring vats and let his body be mulched into a bloody soup regrowing from just a head every time. He felt every bone break and every organ and muscle tear until his body was no more, but even that was better than being alone again. Another breakthrough came when he realized it only took one drop to stave off death for a day. Suddenly the mass vats of blood could be stretched much further allowing Barrack to expand his network. Only a decade after his first infected human he had a whole network dependent on his blood to survive. They had abilities similar to his although not nearly as strong. In the silence of the night they world torment city after city leaving chaos in their wake. The Voidmother was wrong about him. Barrack was not a monster then, but she had given him the means to be so much more. He realized that his wish truly had come true. He was more powerful than anyone and had no fear of death. He learned to embrace his curse some small way thriving on it.
As his mind fell into madness that immortality brought the already fragile minded. He turned his friends into worshipers and worshipers into slaves.
Barrack was building an army and once he had it he would take it to The Voidmother and kill her. He would become the new god.
And this became his obsession.
